About Us
Founders Marcus Robbins and Wayne Armstrong opened Pennyweight in 2004, the third of their like named businesses on Main Street in downtown St. Helena. The idea was to create a space to showcase their revolving collection of interesting and beautifully crafted gifts and objets sourced from artisans and purveyors from across the country and Europe. They were inspired by shops they had visited in London and Paris where the spaces are beautiful and lend themselves to the pleasure of discovering the variety of treasures on offer.
Pennyweight is housed in a building that dates to 1892, a fine example of Victorian architecture and one of the most photographed in St. Helena. Marcus and Wayne designed the striking interior to reflect and respect its history by sourcing antique mahogany curved glass showcases and six large crystal chandeliers suspended from the pressed tin ceiling. The visual effect along with the scents of leather, beeswax and botanicals create and warm and welcoming environment.
The shelves and vitrines are filled with a rotating selection of European leather goods, artisanal paper and glass, apothecary, writing instruments, sculpture and jewelry. The selection of candles and interesting accessories make gift giving a home run.
Marcus and Wayne along with their team look forward to welcoming you to what has become a destination for visitors and locals alike. Be sure to ask to say hello to Chance, our 4 pound Morkie, Pennyweight’s shop dog and official greeter.
